WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
A Comment On the Author
Modern productions of William Shakespeare's plays often wrestle with whether or not to modernize/sanitize the plays. At Upstart, we believe that William Shakespeare has created characters who are the most human of humans, written in such beautiful, original language that centuries of actors have brought them to vivid life. And that by watching and performing the works of William Shakespeare, language literacy is improved for audience and actor. His plays are also deeply stained with English Imperialism and full of many bigotries. But whitewashing his works would not allow a full conversation about their flaws and harms, so instead we present them in full and recommend Professor Kim F. Hall's Things Of Darkness as a place to start a more enlightened conversation.
